CGV Announces AI Film Contest Winners
CGV has announced the winners of its pioneering AI Film Contest, marking a significant milestone as the first theatre company to hold such an event. The contest invited filmmakers to submit short films created with generative AI technologies, exploring themes of 'heroes' and 'villains' or free topics. The awards ceremony took place at the CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall SCREENX theatre, showcasing the innovative work of both established and emerging filmmakers.
A New Era of Filmmaking
CGV's AI Film Contest introduced a fresh approach to filmmaking by encouraging creators to leverage the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence. This innovative competition allowed participants to explore themes of 'heroes' and 'villains,' as well as submit works based on their own inspirations. Participants were tasked with producing short films between 10 to 20 minutes that could entertain and provoke thought using AI as a creative partner. The contest, which received an overwhelming response, concluded on March 24, resulting in 15 films advancing to the final round after rigorous preliminary screenings. Esteemed judges, including director Eom Tae-hwa, author Kim Joong-hyeok, science communicator Gwaedo, and director Jeong Chang-ik, provided their expert evaluations. Adding another layer of engagement, around 7,000 viewers participated in an online voting process to help select five winning films alongside the judges’ selections. CGV's initiative not only aims to redefine the standards of storytelling but encourages collaboration with AI technologies to open new avenues for creativity and expression. By merging technology with artistry, CGV seeks to inspire a new generation of filmmakers who embrace innovation and adventure.Celebrating Outstanding Talent
The highlight of this event was the announcement of the main award winner, 'The Wrong Visitor' by Hyun Ha-ri. This exceptional film successfully intertwines a philosophical narrative centered on themes like death and consciousness while delivering a visually stunning experience through AI-generated imagery and a storybook-like aesthetic. The judges praised the work for its concept and execution, noting its balance of technical prowess and storytelling depth. In her acceptance speech, Hyun Ha-ri expressed her reflections on the creative process. She stated, “In creating this film, I realized that ‘AI movies’ should not be seen as ‘Film by AI,’ but rather ‘Film with AI.’” This statement encapsulates the spirit of collaboration that defines the contest, highlighting how filmmakers are encouraged to utilize AI as a tool for innovation rather than a replacement for traditional artistic methods. Furthermore, other notable winners included ‘0KB’ by Kang Dae-hyung, which received the Excellence Award, and ‘The Cat Couriers of the Galaxy’ by Kim Young-hyun and ‘Pinocchio: Begins’ by Ahn Ye-eun, which secured the Outstanding Award. The CJ ENM Special Award was given to ‘Paper World’ by Kim Yoon-gak. The accomplishment of these filmmakers showcases the remarkable talent and creativity present in the industry today, promising exciting future endeavors.A Look Ahead at CGV's Plans
CGV's commitment to fostering new content is evident as it plans to screen these award-winning films along with four other finalists across all CGV theatres this summer. This initiative will not only provide an essential platform for showcasing emerging creators but also allow audiences to experience the unique blend of art and modern technology. CGV aims to continually evolve the cinematic landscape by offering innovative programming and elevating the diverse voices in filmmaking.
